YES! Online Exclusive: PBB Teen Housemate Niña Jose
Standing 5’8” with a slender figure, waves of long hair cascading down her back and a charming smile, Mary Claire Judith Phyllis Jose -- or Niña as she is popularly known-- is fit to be a beauty queen. She might have been one too if Big Brother had not come along. What’s the story behind the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition’s Sosy Girl ng Makati? YES! Online finds out in an exclusive interview with Nina Jose’s parents and best friend.
“Pinaglihi ko yan sa Sto. Niño, kaya Niña,” says Mommy Claire, referring to her daughter whom she is currently watching on TV as the interview takes place. Niña, 17, is the second child of Claire, 47, and Philip, 45. She has two siblings, Bonita,28, and Lucky,12. “Yung mukha niya very angelic.” Claire remarks while watching her “baby” shovel cement for one of Kuya’s assigned tasks. Nina’s love for off-shoulder tops have been the subject of much comment. True to form, she’s wearing short shorts, a yellow blouse and a black bolero for this labor-intensive assignment.
“Nung kabataan ko, a lot of girls had a crush on me and I had a lot of crushes also,” jokes Philip, Niña’s dad. “Gusto kong sabihin na nasa lahi namin yan.” Claire remains silent, although she can also take the credit for her daughter’s good looks. She herself used to be a model in the ‘70s. “Someone asked me, ‘how does it feel to have a daughter?’” Philip continues. “They should ask ‘how does it feel to have a beautiful daughter?’” says the proud papa.
“I think she was born to be a celebrity” explains Ruby Ann Denuna, 17, Niña’s best friend. Both girls studied in Assumption College, a very exclusive all-girls school in Makati. Like most teenagers, Niña likes listening to R&B, hanging out in nearby Glorietta and watching TV -- particularly PBB Celebrity Edition. “She has a big crush on Zanjoe!” Ruby discloses. “She even wrote in her Friendster that her occupation is ‘wife of Zanjoe.’”
Growing Pains
Typical as she may seem, Niña had a not-so-typical childhood. When she was 12 years old, she struggled with an eating disorder. “Maaga kasi siya naging conscious sa physical appearance niya” Ruby shares. “After one meal, one small meal, she would ask me ‘did I gain weight na ba?’… I would her tell her naman na you better eat. Napansin rin niya. She was telling me nalalagas na daw yung buhok niya and then her nails were turning blue.”
“Dinala ko yan sa psychiatrist” adds Philip. The doctor diagnosed anorexicwith anorexia, a condition where one is terrified about gaining weight and ends up starving herself. Anorexia is usually the symptom of deeper emotional problems. “Nung sinabing may anorexia siya,” Claire shares. “ ‘don’t take [medicine].’ Ginawa niya yun. Gumaling siya mag-isa kaya... sabi ko dito sa psychiatrist na baka parte lang to ng kaniyang adolescence.”
Within a few months, the strong-willed Niña started eating again, overcoming her eating disorder with the support of her family and friends. What puzzled everyone was what happened after. “Yung naging effect nun sa kaniya, ginanahan siya mag-aral” recounts Philip. In fact, Niña finished grade school as one of the top students in her class. Even Claire was shocked, “nakakapagpatalino pala ang anorexia.”
Mommy's Girl
In 2000, Philip and Claire separated. “On and off kami. Nung 2000 siya umalis. Siguro hindi lang talaga destined” says Claire. Philip admits, “I know I haven’t been there for [Niña] during the times I was supposed to. I don’t blame her if she said those things about me [inside the PBB house]. I have to accept it. Her feelings are true. I have to admit, I cried, but I processed it already. Seeing her there made me learn things about her.”
After Philip left, Niña stayed with her mom and her siblings in their 2-bedroom condo unit in Makati. “Mommy’s girl yan,” Claire divulges. “Malambing, spoiled, prangka yan. Kaya nakalagay dun sa [internet forum] na sinasagot niya ako. Yung pag sagot niya, hindi yung walang modo. Ganun lang yan pero kapag alam niyang galit na ako, takot na ‘yan.”
Niña the Goodwill Ambassador
But there’s another side of the teen housemate that only a few know about. Philip shares “She idolizes Audrey Hepburn because she served in Africa. When she was asked in the interview [with ABS-CBN] what she wanted to do, she said she would want to serve the poor, if not here in the Philippines, in Africa.” Philip believes that Niña's Assumption education has taught her humility. “She went to the poor,” he says of his daughter’s school immersions and exposure trips. “Sa itsura niya dapat hindi niya pinuntahan, pero pumunta pa rin siya. Do not judge a book by its cover talaga. [She’s] very kind-hearted and generous.”
The Road to PBB
It’s been highly publicized that when Niña's grandfather (Claire’s father) died a year ago, the family fell on hard times. “Naawa siya [Niña] sakin kasi nga yung father ko ako nagasikaso ng business,” says Claire. A deal gone bad cost the business millions. Although Philip has been supporting them financially, his contribution isn’t enough to sustain the lifestyle they were used to.
Niña shared with her housemates that they haven’t paid the rent for four months. “Oo totoo yun,” Claire confirms. She explains that they’ve been living in their house for 10 years and that their landlord has been very kind and understanding. Even though Philip offered to move them to a more affordable place, they can’t leave because of their unsettled debt. “Sabi niya bago siya pumasok ‘Mommy, kausapin mo yung may-ari.’ Kita mo 17 years old mag-isip ng ganiyan kaagad, biglaan nawalan kami. Galing siya sa spoiled na spoiled, di ko akalaing ganiyan ang isip niya… Nakikita niyang nahihirapan ako. Gusto niyang magtrabaho sa call center-- mabait eh. Gusto niyang tulungan ako. Priority niya yun.”
Niña’s original plan was to join beauty pageants, with Miss Earth already knocking on their door. As chance would have it, she was chosen to be one of the 12 housemates out of the thousands who auditioned. “Una para makatulong sakin,” Claire explains why Niña wanted to join the popular reality show. “Pangalalawa, makilala niya yung sarili niya. Ma-realize niya kung sino siya, kung kaya niya… matuto ba.” Philip believes the same thing, “the venue [PBB] is not for rich or poor… [But for the housemates] to gain respect, to value life as it is, to be humble, to be simple.”
And how does it feel to be away from your child? “For me andiyan lang siya,” Claire answers, referring to the TV set that has been tuned to the PBB 24/7 channel since the reality show started. “Kaya yun ng anak ko.” No wonder the male housemates have been known to refer to “tita” watching whenever someone flirts with or is teased to the Sosy Girl.
Big Night
Two weeks into the competition, Niña is now one of the three nominees for eviction. Most of the housemates nominated her because they didn’t believe that she's not rich. They admitted on TV that they feel she doesn’t need the money. But coming to Nina’s defense, Philip simply states:“We don’t have money right now, But somehow we’re surviving.” “Nung nomination night ang nasabi lang niya thank you,” Claire adds with a sob.. “Hindi siya humingi ng boto. Hindi mayabang ang anak ko. Hindi siya mayabang.”
“For her to be included in the top 4 is a blessing,” Philip shares. “To win is a bonus. All I want is for her to stay for the next three weeks for her to know herself, for her to heal, and for me to learn. Sana mabuo niya ang storya niya para matuto ang mga tao.”[/i]
